    Book
    Italy and space
    : habitat modules
    Vallerani, Ernesto
    McGraw-Hill , 1995

This book, which contains a wealth of facts and is very easy to read, is the exciting story of a thrilling adventure, encompassing Italian participation in the various projects for a space laboratory, from the Spacelab to the Columbus program. The story is well worth telling because, apart from a narrow circle of specialists, only a few people are aware that Italy made such an outstanding technical and industrial contribution to space exploration. The author, now President of Alenia Spazio, has been directly involved in the most important phases of this great technological challenge for more than thirty years. His reconstruction -technically meticulous and enlivened by vivid human aspects- aims especially at "pointing out the spirit animating these events and the strategy at the basis of such enterprises". As a matter of fact, Italian participation in space programs has been guided by a strategy that, "thanks to the enlightened vision of a few people", enabled Italy to acquire a privileged position in the exploration and exploitation of this "new frontier" of mankind.

2009 engineering science book award from IAA.

    Skylab science demontration
    : episode 1-6
    NASA CORE , 1974
During the summer of 1973, astronauts Alan Bean, Jack Iowsna and Dr. Owen Garriott spent almost 2 months aboard the Skylab spacecraft, the world's first laboratory in space. During this mission, Dr. Garriott conducted a number of science experiments specifically intended for high school students. The programs highlight these experiments.

    Space stations
    : systems and utilization
    Messerschmid, Ernst ; Bertrand, Reinhold
    Springer-Verlag , 1999

The design of space stations like the recently launched ISS is a highly complex and interdisciplinary task. This book describes subsystem technologies, system integration and the utilization of space stations in general and of the ISS in particluar. It so adresses students, engineers in space technology, and potential users.

    Cassiopee, sharing science Tixier, Alain
    CNES Diffusion , 1996

The Cassiopee mission, which Claudie Andre-Deshays takes part in here, went off from August 17 to September 2, 1996, and was carried out on board the Russian MIR space station.
Cassiopee is the seventh manned space flight organised by CNES. It is a logical continuation of earlier missions, with a new programme of experiments devised by the French scientific community. They explored the effects of microgravity in the fields of life sciences and physical sciences, and there is also a technological part.
Claudie Andre-Deshays, a rheumatologist and research scientist, is the first French woman who flew in space.
The Cassiopee crew made up of Commander Valery Korzun, flight engineer Alexander Kaliery and the scientist-cosmonaut Claudie Andre-Deshays, joined Youri Oussatchov and the American Shannon Lucid, who have been on the MIR station for the last six months.

Topics discussed include: the history of space stations, who is involved with the ISS project, what the ISS will be used for, dimensions, power supply and the teamwork involved in this multi-national program. Two activities are included in the video resource guide using science, mathematics and geography concepts.

    Off the planet
: surviving five perilous months aboard the space station Mir
    Linenger, Jerry M.
    McGraw-Hill , 2000

"An unvarnished account of his near-disastrous stay, in 1997, on Russia's creaky space station... an engrossing report that NASA's publicity machine will bemoan."
    Booklist
"[Linenger's] frank, personable prose shows readers what it's like to be an astronaut -or at least to be this particular astronaut, trying, along with his Russian companions, to live and work with good humor on an 11-year-old, half-broken, famously flammable space station as its air fills with antifreeze that is leaking out of shoddy cooling lines."
    Publishers Weekly
"NASA astronaut Linenger spent five months aboard the Russian space station Mir, a spacecraft operating far beyond its design life. His personal account vividly captures the challenges and privation he endured both before and during his flight."

    Space marketing
    : a European perspective
    Peeters, Walter Andre Regina
Kluwer Academic Publishers , Microcosm Press , 2001

Space activities are currently in a transition phase: the shift from publicly financed to private activities is a result of reduced public funding and increased commercial space opportunities. This leads to an increased commercial space marketing mix and marketing management.
A classical "4Ps" approach is proposed, covering the Product, Price, Physical distribution and Promotion of space activities. Special emphasis is placed on technology transfer, spin-off and intellectual property aspects, as well as on aspects of space economy including alternate financing schemes such as PPP (Public-Private Partnership) and sponsoring. However, space activists require broad public support and the exploratory aspect of space activities, the "space frontier" dimension should not be ignored. The philosophical dimension as an integral part of the marketing mix is therefore elaborated in detail.
The approach is illustrated with two case studies: commercialisation of the International Space Station (ISS) and the emerging space tourism market.
